Expressing the changing of perception through art

Grispace 170205 is a collectively run art space whose curators transform a hotel lobby into a stage for contemporary, progressive art. Hosting six-month exhibitions, they approached us with the task of creating a unique visual identity that stands out from its already-defined surrounding. Our design solves this by playing with op art and optical illusions. In doing so, it expresses art’s power of changing perception.

How to Separate Carefully – Grispace 170205 curated by Lara Baltsch, Fanny Frey, Lisa Kleiner and Gregor Vogel

The visual identity builds upon a custom version of our typeface Solid, with all characters of the name ‘Grispace 170205’ rounded. Subtly irritating the eye, this evokes the feeling of looking at an optical illusion.

Further exploring the fields of optical illusions and op art, we created one illustrative key visual per exhibition. To match this illustration, we warped its corresponding title in the same style.

The visual identity is based on a custom typeface and comprises exhibition signage, poster and flyer designs, social media animations and templates as well as exhibition publications.
