Art Container

A spatial identity for an innovative art space

A non-commercial, innovative off space and independent gallery, the art container project is a platform for exhibitions, workshops and street art in Zurich. Skala was approached to transform these qualities into a cohesive visual language.

Using the space’s architecture, the logo builds from the container’s ratio, adopting its facade into the brand mark. This is done by reflecting the lines of the container’s sidewall panels in thickness and program for both the brand mark border and its condensed typeface. Container-lettering referencing typography builds the metaphorical art space through form and placement inside the given ratio.

Stationery layouts are informed by the harsh horizontal form of the logo. Placing it at the top of each layout, creating open space that demands a attention.

By translating harsh forms and mechanical gestures into a sensitive use of typography and space, the visual identity enhances the object’s industrial heritage and builds a technical but playful metaphor for the art spaces and their function — forming an appearance that is significant, reputable and fresh.
